BrownTrout is a privately held company based in El Segundo, CA. Founded in 1986 the company soon became the leader in calendars in the US and around the world. Affiliated companies were formed in the late 1990’s in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Australia. BrownTrout services major retailers in all of these markets, both in bricks and mortar retail and online.

Over the past few years BrownTrout has entered the market for planners. As the global leader in dated calendars, BrownTrout sought out the best brands to associate with, as we set out to rede­fine the planner category. We are excited about our two partnerships, FranklinCovey® and Pantone™.

FranklinCovey is known for its time management system and leadership development training, having impacted organizational development around the world based upon the principles of Stephen Covey as laid out in his book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. Franklin Covey has retained brand loyalty through their incredible array of consulting products and the respect that they have earned around the world. BrownTrout has collaborated with FranklinCovey to launch an entirely new line of planners, for the executive and leadership markets, with planners true to the Franklin Covey system. BrownTrout has been able to make the Franklin Planner system more accessible through its vast retail distribution. All of our FranklinCovey Planners use the world-renowned FranklinCovey time management system, adapted specifically for the BrownTrout line of planners under the direction of the folks at FranklinCovey.

In addition, we have long wanted to create a line of truly fashion forward planners. After years of study, research, and brainstorming, we ­ finally realized that our best possible partner in such an endeavor would be Pantone, the color experts. We have now launched our first line of Pantone Fashion Planners for 2019, please check them out on this website! For release in December is an entirely new line of planners featuring the Color of the Year for 2019, to be revealed December 6. This will be an exciting and unique promotion!

Our new line of planners will be of the highest quality, both in construction and content. We have made every effort to ensure that our FranklinCovey- and Pantone-branded planners continue the BrownTrout tradition of high quality and fair price.

BrownTrout Publishers, Inc. is the largest calendar publisher in the world, and the only major publisher that is still independent. We produce over 1,200 titles and print more than 13 million calendars annually for a worldwide market. But we didn’t start this big. BrownTrout was founded in 1986, in Salt Lake City, by today’s CEO Mike Brown, along with his brother Marc Brown and sister-in-law Wendover Brown, with just three published calendar titles and 10,000 printed calendars. It wasn’t long before we published calendars on every state, and then began to publish wildlife, dog, cat, and horse breed calendars.

The nineties saw big growth for BrownTrout, as our corporate headquarters moved to San Mateo, California, and sales offices opened in Redondo Beach. Our distribution center in Vacaville opened in 1997, right before we won “Vendor of the Year” from Borders Books (remember them?). We began our international expansion in 1999, opening offices around the world. With offices in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Netherlands, we embraced an international strategy that still allows us to serve our network of local and multinational retailers. A focus on distribution gained us a substantial market in Japan, Korea, South Africa and Latin America, and we continue to be a force in these markets.

In 2000, our first licensed title, Pokemon, sold over 1.2 million units, generating over $15 million in retail sales for our customers. BrownTrout then began a systematic licensing program for calendars, eventually dominating the market for rock and pop calendars, automobiles, quirky animals, and many other properties. We work with all of the major licensees and appreciate our license partners.

Our calendar product list exceeded 1,000 titles by 2007, which eventually included the popular Goats in Trees title, Yoga Cats, and the debut of Justin Bieber’s first calendar with over 630,000 copies sold. By then our product line included Wall calendars, Box calendars, engagement calendars and diaries, and many other formats. Our goal was to be a one stop shop for our customers.

2008 saw the financial crisis. Retail sales went soft and were that way for years. BrownTrout restructured, eventually moving the head office in 2011 from San Mateo in northern California to El Segundo in the Los Angeles area.  Also in 2011 BrownTrout Canada acquired Wyman Publishing of London, Ontario  Canada. The Wyman acquisition has been quite successful, with the addition of 150 titles and several coveted licenses such as Canadian Geographic.

Through the years we have continued to win numerous Calendar Marketing Association awards and was named “Vendor of the Year” by many retailers. Our diverse team of professionals is what makes us successful each and every year.



Teams come in all shapes and sizes, with varying levels of function, focus, and fun. At BrownTrout, we work hard, and then we like to play hard. We believe that’s what good teams do. We focus every day on creating, selling, and distributing awesome products, knowing that we need each other for our unique functions and contributions. Whether a long-timer or shortterm employee, we value each BrownTrouter for what they individually bring. Our value for each other keeps us focused on the value of our customers as well.


We also make time to celebrate each other. Every month, we celebrate something about someone, like a birthday, anniversary, or new baby. And since we know our holidays, we make it a priority to enjoy them all year long, especially our Annual Halloween Runway Contest, where sometimes our calendars come to life through costumes, props, and makeup. Imagine live Emoji’s, Yoga Dogs, John Wayne, or assorted wild animals!


Our 2019 season brought us the FranklinCovey® licensing partnership, where we have embraced some of the teachings of Stephen Covey. Through creating and producing The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People® calendars and designing a new line of FranklinCovey-branded planners, we’ve learned that those who stay the course, trust, and transparently collaborate are the most effective. And at BrownTrout, we strive for this continuously. We are a team made up of diverse individuals who come together effectively to create and distribute consumer-focused and passion-driven products. And we always have fun, too.
