CALENDAR HOLIDAYS & DATES

Ascension
Title: All 2011 Calendars

The date for 2011 Ascension comes from the Roman Catholic Liturgical Calendar. That source confirms June 2, Thursday, as the actual date but also states that it is celebrated on the following Sunday.

For many years we have used that criteria and used "Ascension Sunday" as the date to mark. However, upon reflection, the marked day will change to the Thursday observance from 2012 on. Thank you Gabriele Sowada for her feedback on this.

2011 CAPTIONS

Title: All Dog Breed Square Wall Calendars (Various) - June
Our list of Notable Dogs has a misidentification. "Neos" is not the name of the Neapolitan Mastiff in the Harry Potter series. "Fang" is his proper name. Our apology goes to Mr. Rubeus Hagrid!

Title: All Horses Square Wall Calendars (Various) - January
The very gentle Vania Carr points out that in our list of Notable Horses we have "Atreyu" of Michael Ende's wonderful novel "The Neverending Story." Atreyu is actually the name of the main character. The name of his horse is Artex.

Title: Boston 2011 Square Wall Calendar
ISBN: 978-1-4216-6873-4
Joe Malono of Seattle, Washington points out a mistake in the 2011 Boston Square calendar. In July we show two prominent buildings. The one on the left is the John Hancock Building and the modernistic on the right is the John Hancock Tower. The latter was said to be the Prudential Building but that is not even in the picture.

Title: Pittsburgh 2011 Square Wall Calendar
ISBN: 978-1-4216-6883-3
Jon J. Danzak compliments us on this title -- BUT points out a spelling error in the caption for February. We have "Heinze Chapel...", it should be "Heinz Chapel". Check out a beautiful place at: heinzchapel.pitt.edu

Title: Railroads 2011 Square Wall Calendar
ISBN: 978-1-4216-6639-6
Dear Rail Fans,
Our procedure to erase license plates on private automobiles inadvertently extended to the number boards of locomotives. We apologize and are fully cognizant on the desirability of leaving those numbers on. For the record, the May picture is BNSF 7795. In the October picture's foreground is 4410 and the engine in the background is 4405. The other images without number boards have that data in their captions.

Title: Roosters 2011 Square Wall Calendar
ISBN: 978-1-4216-6704-1
The cover shows a rooster that has been debeaked. This mutiliation is to keep over-crowded chickens from pecking each other to death in the poultry industry. According to Marion Lane, formerly of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NY), "With enough space and freedom to practice their natural behaviors, chickens don’t need to have their beaks cut." Debeaked chickens cannot forage or groom. Thank you, Marion, for calling our attention to this. Browntrout is very concerned about the welfare of animals.

Title: Wild & Scenic Texas 2011 Deluxe Wall Calendar
ISBN: 978-1-4216-6933-5

Mr. Daniel Nammour, who has lived in both Texas and Utah, points out an error in the 2011 Wild & Scenic Deluxe Texas title (6933-5). The October photograph shows dramatic landscape with the "Colorado River" in the distance. It is indeed a river named the Colorado, but it is in the vicinity of Dead Horse Point State Park near Moab, Utah.
There are two separate rivers in the US named "The Colorado". One goes through Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and California. The other Colorado River is wholly within the state of Texas, beginning near Lubbock and ending at Matagorda Bay. Thank you, Daniel!

Title: Washington DC 2011 Mini Wall Calendar
ISBN: 978-1-4216-6887-1
Ever get Washington, DC and the state of Washington mixed up? We did. The Washington, DC Mini Calendar's September picture is from Bellevue, Washington and is out of place by a mere 2,316 miles.

Title: Wildflowers 2011 Square Wall Calendar
ISBN: 978-1-4216-6139-1
Top left frame shows a purple fringed orchid. The top right frame is the starflower. The bottom left frame is the wild blue phlox. Bottom right shows the purple coneflower. The back cover's 13th image shows the purple fringed orchid.
Many thanks to Mrs. Standring of Naples, Florida for alerting us to this mix-up.
